What Really Causes a Heat Wave?

Imagine stepping outside into air that feels heavy, still, and oppressively hot—day after day. That’s what happens during a heat wave, and it’s caused by a stubborn high-pressure system that parks over a region and refuses to leave. In the atmosphere, air sinks in high-pressure areas, and as it sinks, it gets compressed and heats up—just like a bicycle pump warms up when you use it. This creates a powerful “lid” that traps heat near the ground and prevents cooler, stormy weather from moving in. The result is a prolonged period of hot, dry, and stable conditions, which we call a heat wave.

But why does this high-pressure system get stuck? That’s where the jet stream comes in. This fast-moving river of air high above us normally pushes weather systems from west to east. But sometimes it weakens, meanders, or gets blocked by other atmospheric patterns, leaving the high-pressure system stalled in one place for days or even weeks. So when you’re baking under that relentless sun, it’s often because the jet stream has literally paused the natural weather cycle.
